Sensing Place brings together works by three artists for whom the notion of place is important. For Morna, the urban landscape of London is a subject that dominates her current practice. She relishes the contrast between fragile grasses and Brutalist architecture, or the transformative effect of snow in a city park. Human traces are evident, but people are either absent or obscured, reflecting a wider theme of loss. Jane’s work interrogates the process of constructing the urban environment, particularly in the capital. Her recent focus is on the ‘super- modern’; she is intrigued by the challenges of materials and how seemingly banal structures come to embody aspirations and hopes for each generation that moves into the ‘London of their dreams’. Andrea’s pieces are driven by the hand, working from the idea of reaching out to touch as the primary means of sensing place.  She begins with the picture frames themselves as an object to be held and as a representation of the way that spaces and places form a frame around our lives.  The mix of digital, handprints and drawing into paint reflect our movement from virtual to real and back in ways that we barely notice.

Andrea Arnold (andrea1arnold@talktalk.net, website www.andreaarnold.co.uk)

Andrea always made things but as a child was directed into knitting, sewing and crochet.  Whilst away backpacking in 1997, she decided to start designing her own cushion covers and cross stitch patterns.  Back home and faced with a blank sketchbook and colouring pencils from W H Smith, she thought it might be a good idea to do a drawing class first…  Andrea completed her BA in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins in 2011 and after a few years developing her painting skills is now on a Masters in Fine Art (MFA) at the University of the Arts (UAL) Wimbledon College of Art.   Andrea’s first degree was in Mathematics, and she has earned her living as an accountant in general practice, then a niche tax specialist and, most recently, as a contracts negotiator.  Previous exhibitions include Holdron’s Arcade, Space 272 and the Crypt Gallery St Pancras.

Morna Hinton (morna_hinton@hotmail.com , website https://mornahinton.weebly.com/)

Morna followed an Art Foundation course at Bath Academy of Art before completing a degree in History of Art at University College London and a PGCE in Art and Design at the Institute of Education. She spent 23 years working in the Learning Department of the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) taking on increasingly senior management roles. In 2014 she left the V&A to pursue her art practice full-time and is currently taking an MFA at UAL Wimbledon. Previous exhibitions include Dulwich Open House, Jeannie Avent Gallery, Gabriel Fine Art, Holdron’s Arcade, the Crypt Gallery St Pancras and the 2017-18 Columbia Threadneedle Figurative Art Prize at the Mall Galleries.

Jane Pickersgill (jane.pickersgill@hotmail.co.uk, website www.janepickersgill.com)

Jane obtained an Honours degree in Fashion Design from the University of Northumbria. Moving to London in the 1980’s, she pursued a successful career with many high street fashion brands before turning freelance and returning to study printmaking and painting which she combined with part-time teaching. Now studying for an MFA at UAL Wimbledon she has exhibited with other Masters students at the Platform Gallery in Holborn and Crypt Gallery St Pancras. She has presented work alongside Morna several times, notably in Dulwich Open House and at the Jeannie Avent Gallery, and has also taken part in the Bermondsey Open and Lee Open Studios. She contributed to Zeitgeist Arts Projects, and has been selected for the Rootstein Hopkins  ‘Draw More’ competition, and ‘Inspired by…the V&A’, both run by Morley College.
